Our Story

Rooted In Soil, Built On Trust

Brown Spices

Brown Spices began with a simple frustration: opening jar after jar of "pure" spice powder that tasted of almost nothing. Somewhere between the farm and the kitchen shelf, the flavour — and often the honesty — had gone missing. So we decided to go back to the source, work directly with growers, and sell spices the way they were always meant to be sold: whole, traceable, and freshly packed.

What started as a small effort to source better pepper and cardamom for our own kitchens has grown into Brown Spices — a company built around one idea. If you can't tell us exactly which farm your spice came from, we won't sell it.

Our Mission

To make it effortless for households to cook with real spice again — full-strength, chemical-free, and priced fairly for both the customer and the farmer who grew it.

Partnerships

How We Work With Farmers

Malabar Black Peppercorns

We partner with small pepper growers across the Western Ghats of Kerala and Karnataka, where vines have climbed the same hillside trees for generations. Prices are agreed before harvest, giving farmers certainty and giving us first pick of the crop at peak pungency.

Green Cardamom Pods

We work with growers in the cardamom hills of Idukki, Kerala — the birthplace of true Malabar cardamom. Fair prices set ahead of the picking season mean farmers aren't at the mercy of market swings, and we get pods harvested at their most fragrant.

Ceylon & Cassia Cinnamon Sticks

Our Ceylon bark comes from smallholder peelers in Sri Lanka's low country, while our cassia is sourced from growers in Northeast India. In both cases, we agree terms before the bark is stripped, so farmers know their return before the season begins.

Whole Cloves

We source from clove farmers along the Tamil Nadu–Kerala border, where the trees have long thrived in the humid coastal climate. Locking in prices ahead of the flower-bud harvest gives growers predictability and ensures we get buds picked at the right moment, before they open.

Cumin & Coriander Seeds

We partner with farming families across Gujarat and Rajasthan, the heartland of India's cumin and coriander belt. Pre-harvest pricing agreements protect growers from volatile mandi rates and let us secure seed while it's still sun-fresh off the plant.

Jeera (Cumin Seeds)

We buy directly from cumin farmers in Unjha and the surrounding Gujarat and Rajasthan belt, agreeing on fair rates before the harvest begins. That stability lets growers plan ahead, and gives us first access to seed at its most fragrant.

Sombu (Fennel Seeds)

Our fennel comes from the same Gujarat and Rajasthan growing tracts as our cumin, often from the same farming families rotating crops. Locking in prices before harvest protects growers from price swings and ensures the seed reaches us at peak sweetness.

Bay Leaves (Tej Patta)

We work with small growers in the Himalayan foothills of Uttarakhand and Sikkim, where bay trees grow wild and cultivated alongside each other. Agreeing on price ahead of the picking season gives farmers steady income and gets us leaves harvested and dried at their most aromatic.

Direct Relationships

We buy in season, in person wherever possible, cutting out layers of unnamed traders so more of what you pay reaches the people who actually grew your spice.

Consistent Standards

Every partner farm follows the same drying, cleaning, and storage practices, so quality never becomes a surprise batch to batch.
